The Problem: Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is the embodiment of frustration in an injury. It’s illogical, and it doesn’t seem to get better with time, or with any sort of approved treatment. However, the bright side was that it does get better. When I was more than a year in I started to convince myself this would be a life-long condition, but the issue did heal.
I suffered for over a year from plantar fasciitis and tried everything under the sun – RICE, cortisone shots, laser therapy treatment, physio, custom orthotics, you name it. I don’t think it was one thing that ultimately cured me, but rather a combination of time, rest, and my body simply deciding that it was time to move on.
Looking For A Solution
I bought the Bird & Cronin night splint early on in the process, and it has probably been the most instrumental, both literally and figuratively, part of my recovery. To all the optimists – no, it didn’t cure me. However, it did alleviate some of the morning discomfort. It didn’t immediately induce a change for the better, but over time, I did notice a difference.
The night splint takes a while to get used to. A doctor told me wearing it while I slept would be a good idea as it elongates the tendons at night and prevents them from tightening up as they so often do, thus causing immense pain in the morning. When I first put it on and tried to sleep with it, I remember being 30 minutes in and thinking, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
For someone who has been a comfortable sleeper, flopping around into a variety of positions throughout the night, for the first few weeks I tried the night splint, I would unbuckle it after increments of 30 minutes to an hour. I was still running, and I thought sleep was being compromised.
I have finally gotten used to it and I often wake during the night to go to the bathroom. When that’s the case, I’m often so tired and drowsy that I’ll fall asleep instantly when I come back and hit my bed. What I began doing, was after the middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, I would come back to my bed, put on the night splint, and be able to fall asleep.
Promising Results With The Bird And Cronin Night Splint
Not only did my foot begin to feel slightly better, but I also gained confidence that I could sleep with this thing that looked like a torture device on my foot. I progressed to full nights sleeping with it on, and despite the fact that my plantar is gone, I still sometimes sleep with it on because it’s simply more comfortable in the morning.
I should mention I tried the so-often-mentioned Strassburg Sock to no avail. The Bird & Cronin Night Splint allows much more flexibility than the sock. Because you’re merely strapped in, and you can control the tightness of the splint, and because of the hard backing, I found it much easier to both fall asleep and stay asleep with the Night Splint. Furthermore, sometimes the Strassburg Sock would cause pain in my Achilles and toes because the stretch was so severe.
